How to Change Your Dropbox Password and Protect Your Files

How to change a Dropbox password

Your Dropbox account is where your documents, photos and backups live, so its password protects some of your most private files. If that login is weak or reused, a single leak could expose everything you have stored in the cloud. Our GetMyPassword team covers how to change your Dropbox password, reset it when you are locked out, and secure your files with two-factor authentication.

Change your password in settings

  1. Sign in at dropbox.com and click your avatar, then Settings.
  2. Open the Security tab.
  3. Select Change password.
  4. Enter your current password, then the new one, and save.

If you sign in with Google or Apple, there may be no separate Dropbox password — manage the login through that provider instead.

Reset a forgotten password

On the sign-in page click Forgot your password? and enter your account email. Dropbox sends a reset link; open it and create a new password. Keep that email account secure, since whoever controls it can reset access to your files.

Check who has access

After changing the password, open Settings → Security and review Devices and linked apps, removing anything you do not recognise. You can also end web sessions there. For shared folders, check that only the right people still have access — old shares can linger long after you forget them.

Cloud storage is a single point of failure for your most important files. A reused password on Dropbox means a breach somewhere else could hand over your documents — which is exactly why it deserves a unique one.

Secure it with a unique password and 2FA

Give Dropbox a password you use nowhere else, created with our password generator, and turn on two-step verification under Security. With a login code required alongside the password, even a leaked login cannot reach your stored files.

Frequently asked questions

How do I change my Dropbox password if I forgot it?

On the sign-in page click “Forgot your password?”, enter your account email, and follow the reset link Dropbox sends. You need access to that email to finish the reset.

How do I see which devices are connected to Dropbox?

Go to Settings → Security and look at Devices and linked apps. You can unlink any device or app you do not recognise, and end active web sessions from the same page.

Is two-step verification worth it for Dropbox?

Absolutely. Because Dropbox holds your private files, two-step verification is one of the best protections available — even a stolen password cannot get in without the second code.
