OfferUp makes selling to a local buyer as easy as snapping a photo, but the same convenience draws scammers who target both sellers and buyers. Your account holds your listings, your messages and, if you ship, a payout method — all worth protecting. Our GetMyPassword team explains how to change your OfferUp password, reset it when you are locked out, and keep the account secure.

Change your password in account settings
- Sign in at offerup.com or in the OfferUp app.
- Open your account, then settings.
- Select the option to change password.
- Enter your current password, then a strong new one, and save.
Use a long password you do not reuse anywhere else, so a leak on another site cannot open your OfferUp account.
Reset a forgotten password
On the sign-in screen choose Forgot password? and enter the email or phone on your account. OfferUp sends a code or reset link; use it to create a new password. Keep your email and phone secure, because whoever controls them controls the reset.
Watch for the “verification code” trick
A classic OfferUp scam targets sellers: a “buyer” says they will send a verification code to make sure you are a real person, and asks you to read it back. In reality they triggered that code on your phone — often to hijack your account or set one up in your name — and reading it back hands them the keys. Another version pushes you to deal or pay off-platform through a link. Never share a code sent to you, and keep deals inside OfferUp.
No genuine buyer needs a code that was texted to your phone. Anyone asking you to “read back a verification code” is not verifying you — they are trying to become you.
Lock it down with a generated password
Create a long, random password for OfferUp with our password generator and keep it in a password manager. Turn on two-step verification if it is offered, never share a code, and keep deals and payments inside the app, so your account and your sales stay protected.
