Your Shopify account is your store: orders, payouts, customer data and the products you sell. A break-in does not just risk your money — it risks your customers’ trust and information too. That makes strong security essential. Our GetMyPassword team covers how to change your Shopify password, reset it when you are locked out, and keep your store account protected.

Change your password in account settings
- Sign in to your Shopify admin and open your account (your name or profile).
- Go to Security or account settings.
- Select Change password.
- Enter your current password, then a strong new one, and save.
Because your store is tied to real money and customer data, give it a long, unique password you use nowhere else.
Reset a forgotten password
On the login page click Forgot password? and enter your email. Shopify sends a reset link; open it and create a new password. Keep the email on your account secure, since whoever controls it can reset your store login and reach your payouts and customers.
Two-factor authentication is a must for a store
A shop is a money account, so a password alone is not enough. Turn on two-factor authentication, ideally an authenticator app or security key. If you have staff accounts, require it for everyone and give each person only the access they need. Watch for phishing too: fake “Shopify support” or “policy update” emails are a common way merchant accounts get stolen.
A hijacked store can change your payout bank details and drain your sales before you notice. For a business account, two-factor authentication is not optional — it is the lock on your livelihood.
Secure it with a unique generated password
Give Shopify a long, random password that exists nowhere else, created with our password generator, and store it in a password manager. Combined with two-factor authentication, careful staff permissions and a habit of ignoring login links in emails, this keeps your store — and your customers’ data — safe.
Frequently asked questions
How do I change my Shopify password if I forgot it?
On the login page click “Forgot password?”, enter your email, and follow the reset link Shopify sends. You need access to that email account to complete the reset.
How do I protect my Shopify store from being hacked?
Use a unique, strong password, turn on two-factor authentication, require it for staff accounts with least-privilege access, secure your email, and never log in through links in emails claiming to be from Shopify.
Should staff have their own Shopify logins?
Yes. Give each staff member their own account with only the permissions they need, rather than sharing one login. This limits damage if an account is compromised and lets you remove access when someone leaves.
