How to Find Saved Passwords on a Mac

How to find saved passwords on a Mac

Your Mac has been quietly saving your logins for years — for websites, your Wi-Fi, even app accounts. So when you need one of those passwords on another device, you don’t have to reset anything; you just have to know where macOS keeps them. We at GetMyPassword show you the three places to look, including the new Passwords app, and how to make sure they’re all syncing safely.

Find passwords in the Passwords app (macOS Sequoia and later)

On recent macOS versions, Apple gathered everything into a dedicated Passwords app — the easiest place to look:

  1. Open the Passwords app from Launchpad or your Applications folder.
  2. Authenticate with Touch ID or your Mac login password.
  3. Browse the list or use the search bar to find a site.
  4. Click an entry to reveal the saved username and password.

Find them through Safari

On macOS Sonoma and earlier — or any time you’re already browsing — Safari holds the same logins. From the menu bar choose Safari → Settings → Passwords, sign in with Touch ID or your account password, select a website and click Show Details to read the password. These are the same entries you’ll see on your iPhone, because they live in iCloud Keychain.

Use Keychain Access for everything else

Some secrets — like saved Wi-Fi passwords — aren’t shown in the Passwords app, and that’s where Keychain Access comes in:

  1. Go to Applications → Utilities → Keychain Access.
  2. In the sidebar pick the login keychain and the Passwords category.
  3. Type the website or Wi-Fi network name in the search field.
  4. Double-click the item, tick Show password, and enter your Mac password to reveal it.

Make sure everything syncs

If your passwords aren’t showing up across your devices, iCloud Keychain is probably off. Turn it on in System Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Passwords & Keychain, and your Mac, iPhone and iPad will share the same vault. If you live across both Apple and Google, you might also keep logins in Chrome — our guide to Google Password Manager covers that side. And when it’s time to replace a weak saved password, generate a strong one with our password generator.
