Turn it on before you need it
This only works if it is enabled ahead of time, so do it now. On iPhone or Mac, open Settings, tap your name, then Find My, and turn on Find My iPhone (or Find My Mac). On Android, go to Settings, then Security or Google, and switch on Find My Device. Windows has Find my device under Settings too. Make sure location is on and you are signed in.
How to use it if a device goes missing
- Sign in to the Find My website or app from another device.
- See its location on a map, and play a sound if it might be nearby.
- Lock it remotely with a message and a contact number on the screen.
- Erase it remotely as a last resort if it is truly gone.
The activation-lock bonus
Find My does more than locate. It enables an activation lock that ties the device to your account, so a thief cannot simply wipe it and use or sell it without your password. That is why a lost phone with Find My on is far less valuable to steal — and why you should never turn it off before selling a device yourself.
A phone you can locate, lock and erase from afar is a phone you have not really lost — just misplaced. The one rule is to switch it on today, not the day it disappears.
Protect the account that controls it
Find My is only as secure as the account behind it — your Apple, Google or Microsoft account. If someone got into that account, they could track your device or turn the feature off.
