A forgotten BIOS or UEFI password is one of the more frustrating lockouts: the computer will not even start Windows, demanding a password before anything loads. This is different from a Windows login, and the fixes are different too. First, what a BIOS password is
The BIOS (or UEFI) is the firmware that starts your computer before the operating system. A BIOS password can lock the setup menu or block boot-up entirely. Because it sits below Windows, you cannot reset it from within Windows — the fix happens at the hardware or firmware level, and only the machine’s owner should be doing it.
On a desktop PC
- Power off and unplug the computer.
- Open the case and find the CMOS battery (a coin cell on the motherboard).
- Remove it for a few minutes to clear the stored settings, then reinsert it.
- Alternatively, use the motherboard’s CLEAR CMOS jumper (see its manual).
Clearing CMOS resets the BIOS to defaults, including the password, without touching your files on the hard drive.
On a laptop
Laptops are harder by design. The battery is buried and the password is often stored in a chip that survives a CMOS reset. Your best route is the manufacturer’s support: with proof of ownership, brands like Dell, HP and Lenovo can provide a reset or a master code. Note the system-generated halt code the laptop shows, as support will ask for it.
The difficulty is intentional. A BIOS password that could be wiped in seconds would be useless against laptop theft — so on modern machines, only the verified owner, through the manufacturer, can clear it.
Set a BIOS password you will remember
Once you regain access, decide whether you really need a BIOS password — it mainly protects against physical tampering. If you set one, make it strong but memorable, and write it down somewhere safe, because there is no easy online reset.
