Change Voicemail Password: Secure Your Phone Messages!

How to change your voicemail password

Voicemail passwords are the ones nobody remembers — you set the PIN once, years ago, and never think about it until a new phone asks for it. The good news is that resetting it is usually quick, and on most phones you don’t even need the old one. We at GetMyPassword show you how to change your voicemail password on iPhone and Android, plus the carrier tricks for when the in-phone option won’t cooperate.

Change your voicemail password on iPhone

Apple makes this refreshingly simple — and on most carriers you won’t be asked for the old PIN at all:

  1. Open Settings → Phone.
  2. Scroll to Change Voicemail Password.
  3. Enter a new PIN of 4 to 10 digits and confirm it.

If that option is greyed out, it’s almost always because of Wi-Fi Calling. Turn it off under Settings → Phone → Wi-Fi Calling, and the Change Voicemail Password menu reappears.

Change it on Android

  1. Open the Phone app and tap the three-dot menu.
  2. Go to Settings → Voicemail → Change Password.
  3. Enter your current passcode, then create and confirm a new one.

Menus differ slightly between Samsung, Pixel and other brands, but the path is almost always inside the Phone app’s voicemail settings.

When you’ve forgotten the current PIN

If Android asks for the old password and you don’t have it, your carrier is the answer. Each one has its own reset path:

  • T-Mobile — dial #793# from your own line; the PIN resets to the last four digits of your phone number.
  • AT&T and Verizon — sign in to your account at att.com or verizon.com and reset the voicemail PIN after verifying your identity.
  • Any carrier — call customer service directly (not the automated line) and verify yourself with account details.

A voicemail PIN protects more than messages — it’s sometimes used to authorise account changes. Don’t leave it as the default last-four-digits, which anyone who knows your number can guess.

Choose a PIN that isn’t obvious

Skip birthdays, 1234 and the last four digits of your number — those are the first things anyone tries. A random four-to-six digit code is far safer and just as easy to save in a note-free way. You can generate one in our password tools, and if you’d like to understand what makes any code hard to guess, read our guide on what makes a strong password.
