Typing a password every time you switch on a computer that only you use gets old fast. Windows 10 lets you remove that login prompt entirely so it boots straight to the desktop. There’s one important catch and one big security caveat, though, and we at GetMyPassword cover both — along with the two ways to do it, depending on the kind of account you have.

The catch: you need a local account
Before anything else, this matters: you can only delete the password of a local account. A Microsoft account password lives online and can’t be left blank. If you sign in with an email address, you’re on a Microsoft account — switch it to local first via Settings → Accounts → Your info → Sign in with a local account instead, then continue below.
Remove the password through Settings
- Open Settings → Accounts → Sign-in options.
- Under Password, click Change.
- Enter your current password and click Next.
- Leave the new password, confirm and hint fields empty, then click Next and Finish.
With the fields blank, the account now has no password and Windows stops asking for one at startup.
Or keep the password but skip the prompt
Prefer to keep the password (including on a Microsoft account) but not type it every boot? Use automatic sign-in instead. Press Win + R, type netplwiz and press Enter, then uncheck “Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer.” Click Apply and enter your password to confirm. Windows keeps the password but logs you in automatically — a safer middle ground than deleting it outright.
Removing your password leaves the device open to anyone who can reach it. Only do this on a home computer that’s physically secure — never on a laptop you carry around.
A smarter compromise
If the goal is just speed, consider a short PIN via Windows Hello rather than no security at all — it’s quick to type and never leaves the device. Keep a strong password on the account as the foundation, and generate one with our password generator if you need to. Our guide to strong passwords explains why a tiny bit of friction at login is worth it.
