Seeing “iPhone Unavailable” or “Security Lockout” on your screen is alarming, but it’s recoverable. The honest part first: in 2026 Apple still won’t let you unlock an iPhone without erasing it — that’s the security trade-off that keeps your data safe from everyone else too. We at GetMyPassword show you the three ways to reset a forgotten iPhone passcode, and how a backup means “erase” doesn’t have to mean “lose everything.”

Reset straight from the iPhone (iOS 15.2 and later)
If your iPhone is on a recent iOS and shows the lockout screen, you may not need a computer at all:
- After several wrong attempts, tap Forgot Passcode? in the bottom corner.
- Tap Start iPhone Reset and sign out of your Apple Account when asked.
- Confirm the erase — the iPhone wipes and reinstalls iOS.
- Set it up again and restore from your backup.
This needs your Apple Account password and a network connection, so have those ready.
Reset with a computer (Recovery Mode)
No lockout button, or an older iPhone? Recovery Mode with a Mac or PC works on every model:
- Connect the iPhone to your computer with a cable.
- Press and hold the side button and keep holding past the Apple logo until you see the computer-and-cable recovery image.
- In Finder (Mac) or iTunes (PC), choose Restore.
- The computer reinstalls iOS and erases the device.
Erase remotely through iCloud
From any other device, go to icloud.com/find, sign in with your Apple Account, click All Devices, pick the locked iPhone and choose Erase iPhone. It’s handy when the phone isn’t in front of you, and it produces the same clean, passcode-free device ready for setup.
All three methods erase the phone — there’s no legitimate way around it. Whether you lose anything depends entirely on your backup, so iCloud or computer backups are your real safety net.
Before you set it up again
After the reset, the iPhone will ask for the Apple Account that was on it (Activation Lock), so make sure you can sign in — our guide to resetting an Apple ID password helps if that’s slipped too. Then choose a passcode you won’t forget but others can’t guess; generate a strong one with our password tools, and don’t reuse your phone passcode as your Screen Time code.
Frequently asked questions
Can I unlock my iPhone without losing data?
No. Apple requires the iPhone to be erased to clear a forgotten passcode. Your data returns only if you have an iCloud or computer backup to restore from afterwards.
How do I put my iPhone in Recovery Mode?
Connect it to a computer, press and hold the side button, and keep holding past the Apple logo until the computer-and-cable image appears. Then choose Restore in Finder or iTunes.
What if I don’t know my Apple Account password either?
Reset it first at iforgot.apple.com, because the iPhone needs that account to get past Activation Lock after the erase. Without it, the device can’t be reactivated.
