Staring at a locked HP laptop with no idea what the password is? Here’s the first thing to know, and it makes everything simpler: there’s no special “HP password.” Your HP laptop runs Windows, so the login you’ve forgotten is your Windows password — which means you have all the standard Windows recovery routes. We at GetMyPassword walk you through them, from the one-click online reset to the last-resort factory restore.

If you sign in with a Microsoft account
Most HP laptops are set up with a Microsoft account, and this is the easiest case. From your phone or another computer, go to account.live.com/password/reset, enter your email, verify your identity with a code, and set a new password. Then sign in to the HP laptop with the new password — no wipe, nothing lost.
If you use a local account
Signed in with a local account instead? On Windows 10 and 11, after a wrong password the lock screen offers Reset password using the security questions you set up — answer them and choose a new password on the spot. If you created a password reset disk (a USB drive) earlier, use that. Forgot a Windows Hello PIN? Tap I forgot my PIN and reset it through your account.
Last resort: reset the laptop
If none of the above is available — no Microsoft account, no security answers, no reset disk — your remaining option erases the password by erasing the account data. From the lock screen, hold Shift and click Restart to reach the recovery menu, then choose Troubleshoot → Reset this PC. You can keep your personal files, but apps and settings go. HP’s own factory recovery (tapping F11 at startup) does the same at the hardware level.
“Reset this PC” with the keep-files option saves your documents but removes installed programs. Back up anything critical first if you can reach a recovery drive.
Set a password you won’t lose again
Once you’re back in, add the safety nets: set up security questions or a password reset disk, and create a strong password you can actually recall. Generate one with our password generator. The process is the same on any Windows machine — if you’d rather drop the login prompt on a home PC, see our guide to removing the Windows 10 password.
Frequently asked questions
How do I reset my HP laptop password without a disk?
If you use a Microsoft account, reset it online at account.live.com/password/reset from another device. For a local account, use the security questions on the lock screen. Otherwise, reset the PC via Troubleshoot → Reset this PC.
Is there a separate HP laptop password?
No. The login is your Windows password (or a BIOS password if one was set). HP doesn’t add its own account password, so Windows recovery methods apply.
Will resetting my HP laptop delete my files?
Resetting the password via your account or security questions keeps everything. Only “Reset this PC” or a factory restore removes data — and even then you can choose to keep personal files while apps are removed.
