Tokenization replaces sensitive data with a stand-in called a token. Instead of storing or sending your real card number, the system uses a random substitute that means nothing on its own. If that token is stolen, it is useless to a thief, because only the payment network can map it back to the real number — and only in the right context.
How it works when you pay
When you add a card to Apple Pay, Google Pay or Samsung Pay, your real number is replaced with a device-specific token. At checkout the merchant receives that token, not your card number, so your actual details are never shared with the shop. The same idea applies to many saved cards online: the merchant stores a token rather than the raw number.
